Ask yourself where it will live. The number one reason kitchen gadgets end up in a charity shop is that they take up too much worktop or cupboard space for the frequency you'd actually use them. Before buying anything with a plug, be honest about how often you'd really use it.

Ease of cleaning is non-negotiable. A gadget that's awkward to clean is one you'll stop using. Check the product reviews specifically for comments about how easy it is to disassemble and wash. Non-dishwasher-safe components are a red flag for most people.

Wattage and power matter for cooking appliances. A low-wattage air fryer or toaster will work, but it'll work slowly and often less evenly. For cooking appliances, the sweet spot is usually mid-range — you're not getting enough from the cheapest models to justify the saving.

Read the long-term reviews, not just the initial ones. Kitchen appliances often look great for the first month. It's the reviews left six months or a year later that tell you whether the plastic has warped, the coating has peeled, or the mechanism has worn out.

Brand reputation matters more here than in other categories. With kitchen appliances, build quality varies dramatically. A well-known brand charging 20% more than a no-name alternative is often genuinely worth it — you'll use this product daily for years.
