Cat litter isn't exactly the most thrilling purchase, but get it wrong and you'll know about it. Every time you walk past that corner of the kitchen. Catsan Hygiene Plus positions itself as the premium option in the non-clumping world, banking on being 100% natural and promising triple odour protection. At £16.25 for 20 litres, it's certainly priced like a premium product. After digging through the spec sheets and customer feedback patterns, I've found this litter does some things brilliantly whilst falling short in others. The key question is whether natural ingredients actually translate to better performance, or if you're paying extra for marketing claims.
Catsan's big selling point is being completely natural - no bleach, no artificial scents, just selected natural minerals. This matters more than you might think. Many cats are sensitive to fragranced litters, and some owners prefer avoiding chemicals where their pets spend considerable time. The granules are designed to absorb liquid rapidly and lock moisture inside each piece, which sounds straightforward but is actually quite clever engineering.
What struck me most from the product specifications is the emphasis on rapid absorption. Non-clumping litters often struggle with this - liquid sits on the surface too long, creating odour issues. Catsan appears to have tackled this with their granule structure, though the proof is obviously in real-world use.
The 'Triple Odour Protection' isn't just marketing speak - there's actually some substance here. The system works through what Catsan calls a 'mineral shield' that traps odours rather than masking them with fragrance. This is particularly relevant for multi-cat households or smaller living spaces where odour control becomes critical.

However, non-clumping litters always face the same fundamental challenge: you can't remove wet spots as precisely as with clumping varieties. This means more frequent complete changes, which affects both convenience and running costs. At £16.25 per 20-litre bag, those frequent changes start adding up.
The easy-pour spout is a thoughtful touch that prevents the usual mess when filling litter trays. Catsan recommends a minimum 5cm depth, which means this 20L bag won't stretch as far as you might hope in larger trays. For a standard-sized tray, you're looking at roughly two fills per bag.
Daily solid waste removal is standard, but the complete litter changes need to happen more frequently than with clumping alternatives. Most users seem to find they need to change it every 4-7 days depending on the number of cats, which is reasonable but not exceptional.
Here's where things get interesting. At around 81p per litre, Catsan Hygiene Plus sits firmly in premium territory. You can get basic non-clumping litters for half this price, so you're paying extra for the natural credentials and enhanced odour control.

Whether that premium is justified depends largely on your priorities. If you have a sensitive cat, or you're committed to natural products, the extra cost makes sense. If you're simply looking for effective, economical litter, there are cheaper options that perform adequately.
The 20L bag size is sensible for most households - large enough to offer some bulk-buying benefit without taking up excessive storage space. Though I should mention the packaging, whilst functional, isn't the sturdiest I've encountered. Handle with care during transport.
Catsan Hygiene Plus delivers on its natural credentials and provides solid odour control for a non-clumping litter. It's worth the premium if you prioritise natural ingredients or have a sensitive cat, but budget-conscious buyers will find adequate alternatives for less money.
