Buying electronics can feel daunting — every product promises to be the best, specs are hard to compare, and prices change constantly. Here's how to cut through the noise and buy with confidence.

Start with your actual use case. The most common buying mistake is purchasing for a feature you'll rarely use. A 4K TV is only worth it if you have 4K content to watch. A flagship smartphone only makes sense if you actually use the camera heavily. Be honest about how you'll use the device day to day.

Understand the key specifications that matter. Ignore vanity specs — megapixels beyond a certain point, refresh rates most content can't use, storage you'll never fill. Focus on the specs that affect your actual experience: battery life, build quality, software support lifespan, and repairability.

Check the warranty and after-sales support. UK consumer law gives you strong protection, but warranty length varies significantly. A two-year warranty from a reputable brand is worth more than a cheaper device with a one-year warranty and poor customer service.

Read the one-star reviews first. Before any purchase, I always read the critical reviews to understand the failure modes. If the same problem keeps appearing — poor battery after six months, software that stops receiving updates, a screen that scratches easily — those are things the product listing won't tell you.

Consider the total cost of ownership. Some electronics have ongoing costs: subscription services, proprietary accessories, replacement parts. Factor those in before you buy.
