The M5 chip is genuinely impressive

Let's start with what matters most — performance. The M5 chip with its 10-core CPU and 8-core GPU is a proper step up from previous generations. We threw everything at it: video editing in Final Cut, running multiple Chrome tabs (because that's how we actually work), and yes, testing those new AI features Apple keeps banging on about.

The difference is noticeable. Apps launch instantly, switching between tasks feels seamless, and we never once heard the fan kick in during normal use. That unified memory architecture Apple loves talking about? It actually works. Having 16GB of unified memory means the laptop handles multitasking without that annoying lag you get when RAM starts getting tight.

Apple Intelligence: actually useful or just marketing fluff?

Here's where things get interesting. Apple Intelligence isn't just Siri with a fancy new name — it's baked into the entire system. The writing tools genuinely helped us knock out emails faster, and the photo search actually found that specific screenshot we needed from three months ago. Privacy-wise, Apple's kept everything on-device, which means your data isn't being shipped off to some server farm.

That said, it's not revolutionary. If you're expecting ChatGPT levels of AI wizardry, you'll be disappointed. It's more like having a very competent assistant who knows exactly where everything is and can help tidy up your writing.

The screen and build quality live up to the hype

The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is genuinely lovely. Colours pop without looking oversaturated, and text is crisp enough that we found ourselves working longer without eye strain. The midnight colour looks sophisticated, though it does show fingerprints more than we'd like.

Build quality is quintessentially Apple — solid, premium, and built to last. At 1.24kg, it's light enough to chuck in a bag without thinking twice. The keyboard feels better than previous generations, and that Touch ID sensor works every time (unlike some laptops we could mention).

Battery life that actually delivers

Apple claims 18 hours, and whilst we didn't quite hit that with heavy use, we consistently got 12-14 hours of real-world work. That includes video calls, web browsing, document editing, and the odd Netflix break. For most people, that's easily a full day without hunting for power outlets.

The MagSafe charging is brilliant — it clicks in satisfyingly and won't send your laptop flying if someone trips over the cable. Though we do wish Apple included more than two Thunderbolt ports.

A few things that niggle

The webcam is decent at 12MP with Centre Stage, but it's still not as good as a proper external camera for important calls. The speakers are fine for casual use, but you'll want headphones for anything serious. And yes, that midnight finish looks gorgeous but shows every fingerprint and smudge.

Storage starts at 512GB, which is reasonable, but creative professionals will likely want more. At least Apple's finally moved past those painful 256GB base configs.
