Twenty quid for a pair of 5kg dumbbells isn't going to break anyone's bank, but it's not exactly pocket change either. I've been digging into these Amazon Basics neoprene dumbbells because they seem to hit that sweet spot between proper gym equipment and the plastic-wrapped horrors you find in discount stores.
The appeal is obvious: hexagonal ends to stop them rolling under your sofa, neoprene coating for grip, and that reassuring Amazon delivery promise. But after trawling through customer feedback and studying the specs, I've found they're not quite the no-brainer purchase they first appear to be.
The standout feature here is the neoprene coating, which Amazon promises will give you a 'secure hold'. After reading through dozens of customer reviews, this seems to be largely true. The texture does provide decent grip, even when your palms get sweaty during a workout. However, I've noticed multiple mentions of the coating having a distinct rubbery smell when first unpacked - something that can linger for weeks if you're storing these indoors.
The coating also shows wear marks fairly quickly around the grip area. Whilst it doesn't affect functionality, these dumbbells won't look pristine for long if you're using them regularly.
The six-sided ends are a proper game-saver if you're working out in a small space. I've seen too many round dumbbells turn into projectiles, rolling across floors and into furniture. These stay exactly where you put them down, which matters more than you might think during circuit training or when you're switching between exercises quickly.

Each end cap has the weight clearly printed on it, plus they're colour-coded. The 5kg pair comes in a distinctive blue, which helps when you're building up a collection of different weights.
At £20.52, these sit in budget territory, and the construction reflects that positioning. The neoprene feels substantial enough for home use, but I wouldn't expect them to survive daily commercial gym abuse. The handles are comfortable for most hand sizes, though people with particularly large or small hands might find the diameter less than ideal.
What struck me from customer feedback is how many buyers mentioned using these for years without issues. That suggests the build quality, whilst not premium, is fit for purpose at this price point.
The spec sheet confirms these are 5kg each, and customer reviews consistently back up the accuracy. No complaints about uneven weight distribution or one dumbbell feeling lighter than the other - which can be an issue with cheaper alternatives.

The balance feels right in hand too. The weight is distributed evenly along the length, so they don't feel top-heavy or awkward during exercises like shoulder presses or tricep extensions.
These aren't the most compact dumbbells you can buy, but they're not unwieldy either. The hexagonal shape makes them stack reasonably well, though you'll want a dedicated storage spot rather than trying to stuff them in a cupboard.
One practical niggle: the neoprene can pick up dust and pet hair like nobody's business. They're easy enough to wipe clean, but it's an extra maintenance step that some might find annoying.
These are solid budget dumbbells that do exactly what they promise. If you want reliable 5kg weights for home workouts without spending serious money, they fit the bill nicely. Skip them if you're planning intensive daily use or can't stand the initial rubber smell.
